Huka Lodge, Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
Towards the end of the 1920s a young Irishman called Alan Pye discovered a very special place in Taupo and established Huka Lodge. In those days conditions were spartan: the Lodge building contained Pye's bedroom, the kitchen and a large dining room. Guests slept in heavy canvas tents pitched over wooden slatted floors, however its fame and reputation grew and the visitor's book read like an angler's version of 'Debrett'. In 1984, the present owner Alex van Heeren fell under the same spell. His resources and passion have added luxury to the location and taken Alan Pye's dream through to today's reality.

Further Info
Today, the appeal of Huka Lodge extends far beyond the fishing, the lodge itself is surrounded by magnificent natural beauty and a stay here is all about making the most of the stunning location. The crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo are fed by mountain streams and are home to some of the most sought-after Rainbow trout in the world. The spectacular and mighty cascades of water forming the Huka Falls are a just short walk from Huka Lodge, on the banks of the Waikato River.
The presence of the river is with you in every room and this really adds to the intoxication of this wonderful retreat. The ambience of the Lodge is homely and comfortable and many a guest has been spotted in the main lodge feet curled up in a chair in front of the real log fire.
Don't worry if you are not a fisherman...you don't have to be one to enjoy a stay here. There are a number of activities that you can participate in which are close by the hotel. There are eight golf courses available within a 30 minute drive of Huka Lodge. The nearby Wairakei International Golf Course is a favourite with guests and the venue for the popular 'Huka Lodge Classic' Golf Tournament held every year. A great way to explore some splendid landscape is to take a guided trek on horse back through local bush trails. Depending on the season Taupo can offer hunters Red and Sika deer, duck shooting, turkey shooting and wild boar hunting. Again in magnificent, wild and challenging countryside with the best guides the area has to offer.
Each day the chef presents a gourmet five-course dinner in the Dining Room or at some of the most romantic indoor and outdoor private dining venues imaginable.
The fishing... Taupo is home to some of the finest Rainbow and Brown trout in the world. The challenge of landing one can be met with the assistance and the legendary knowledge provided by Huka Lodge's own fishing guides.
